monarch Butterflies, The Amazing Journey

The migration of the Monarch Butterfly is a magical and mysterious event.  The Discovery Center at Deep Creek Lake State Park and numerous elementary schools have joined together to study this phenomenon.

In cooperation with Monarch Watch we are tagging Monarch Butterflies in hopes of determining where Garrett County Monarch's end up for the winter.

Volunteers, staff, and school children raise butterflies in the classroom to study and tag, as well as net, tag and release wild monarchs.

When a tag is recovered along the way, or found at overwintering sites in Mexico we are notified that our butterfly made the journey as well as contribute to the growing information about the migration phenomenon.
