Natural Egg Dyeing Program                        Anytime during 

Friends and family come to The Discovery Center & enjoy an egg dyeing session using all natural dyes.  Bring no more than 6 hardboiled eggs to dye.

Ramp Cook-Off

– Judging /  Tasting and learning

Participate in this aromatic tradition by sampling the prepared dishes.  Anyone interested in competing should contact 301-387-7067 early.

FREE FISHING DAYS

Saturdays:   June 5, & 12 and  Sunday      July 4th

Anyone can fish in Maryland’s freshwaters without a fishing license these days only.

 

July 10 & 11 – Saturday & Sunday

Art in the Park  -   Service charge applies for entrance

Over 40 artists exhibit and sell their original artwork.  This includes: pottery, jewelry, photography, woodworking, watercolor and oil paintings and Much more!  Dixieland music, food, roving naturalist programs, etc.  Art demonstrations in a beautiful, natural setting.

Friends Store OPEN HOUSE

Stop by and see what DCLSP has been doing in order to re-open the store for the spring of 2010.  Experience some of the best Appalachia has to offer. Holiday OPEN HOUSE

Come and visit w/Santa and have your picture taken w/him. Great idea for a Family picture w/Santa! Make a keepsake frame for your quality photo and make other Holiday crafts. 

Enjoy hot chocolate, homebaked cookies, etc.  Shop for Holiday gifts and stocking stuffers while visiting the Discovery Center.

March 6 – Saturday:                                                             

Maple Syrup Demonstrations           Swallow Falls State Park

A boiling of Maple Syrup demonstration will be held at Swallow Falls State Park from to on Saturday, March 6th.  A local Maple Syrup producer, Steyer Brothers, will be on hand to answer questions and demonstrate the use of an evaporator in the syrup making process.  Pure maple products will be offered for sale during this time.

Pancake Breakfast & Maple Syrup Demonstrations

Herrington Manor State Park

Pancakes, buckwheat cakes, pure maple syrup, sausage, orange juice and coffee will be served at Herrington Manor State Park. $7.00 adults, and $4.00 for children under 12.  Maple syrup demonstrations will be conducted during the breakfast.

Fishing Rodeo  

Saturday- June 5th,                                                                  

The Fishing Rodeo will be held at the Herrington Manor Lake from to .  Ages 16 and under may register at the Lake House and participate in this FREE event.  The Rodeo is held on one of Maryland’s Free Fishing Days so parents can join in on the fun too.  There is no service charge at the park entrance on this day.  Trophies will be awarded to the various age groups for the largest fish caught.  Door prizes and refreshments will also be part of the Rodeo festival.

 

 

Apple Butter Boil

Saturday & Sunday – September 4th & 5th                        

Come to Swallow Falls State Park and join the staff for an Appalachian Apple Butter Boil and corn roast on September 4th and 5th .  Enjoy arts, crafts and music while stirring apple butter.  Build a blue bird box with Steve Putman and the Patuxent Conservation Corp.  Families are encouraged to participate.  There will be a Service Charge collected at the gate.

 

Herrington Manor Hay Rides -                    Memorial Day to Labor Day

 Stop by the Herrington Manor Office to sign up. Tour the Snaggy Mountain Trail of the Garrett State Forest and enjoy stopping to view the watchable wildlife area and beaver pond. Also enjoy taking a hike to the Bicentennial Oak.  The ride will depart from the office and take approximately 2 hours.  $5 per person – Space limited to 20 people

Cabin Fever Fundraiser – New Germany Lakehouse & Rec Hall

The Friends of New Germany and Savage River Watershed Association will host the third annual Cabin Fever Fundraiser.  The entrance fee covers an evening of homemade soup and bread, live music and door prizes.  There will also be a bake sale and silent auction where individuals can bid on a variety of fine items.  Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children age .  In case of severe weather the event will be held on Sunday March 28th from to .  For more information call

April 17 – Saturday                                                              

Annual Park Cleanup

Join community volunteers and scout groups from the local area to help spruce up the park for the summer season.  The Friends of New Germany will provide lunch.  Meet at the Lakehouse.  Please call to register, 301-895-5453.  There will be no service charge for park admission.

 

April 24 – Saturday                                                              

Native Plant Demonstration/Sale

This fundraising event held at the New Germany State Park lake area, for the Savage River Watershed Association, will feature information on landscaping with native plants, and plants will be available for sale.  Contact the Savage River Watershed Association, 301-689-7156.

 

 

 

May 22 – Saturday                                                              

Friends of New Germany Fishing Rodeo                

 The Maryland Park Service will host the Friends of New Germany Fishing Rodeo at New Germany State Park. The event is open to the public; fishing will be limited to participants who are 4 through 15 years old. The event structure will consist of three classes based upon age: 6 years old and under, 7 - 11 years old, and 12 -15 years old. Fishing is allowed from the shore only; only one line per participant is permitted; no boats are permitted; adults are not allowed to catch fish during the competition; limited adult assistance is permitted in the 6 and under age group only.  Participants must be accompanied by their legal guardians.  For more information, please contact Luke Mongrain at New Germany State Park, 301-895-5453.
