Exciting New Project at The Discovery Center!

FOREST CANOPY WALKWAY

The WGCSPV, Inc is excited to be spearheading an innovative project at The Discovery Center.  Imagine being able to explore the world of the treetops from the lowest branch to 80 feet above the ground. The Western Garrett County State Park Volunteers, Inc. (WGCSPV) in partnership with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources Park Service and Forest Service are excited about plans to offer such an opportunity for visitors to The Discovery Center at Deep Creek Lake State Park, located in Garrett County Maryland. The Forest Canopy Walk (FCW) will be attached to The Discovery Center, a premier regional nature center facility built in 2000. Building the project at the Center will allow easy, at-grade access for all visitors to the site. Also, the proximity to the Center and access to trained staff will facilitate a better understanding of the forest canopy through park interpretation and education.

Tours of the Historic Thayerville Fire

Summer only

As a companion educational opportunity to the Forest Canopy Walkway, the volunteers are now leading tours of the historic Thayerville Fire Tower.  Installed in 1921 it was one of the first fire lookout towers in the state and the last operating tower for the MD Forest Service.

Hike up the steps for spectacular views of Deep Creek Lake from 90 feet up.  Learn about fire history in Maryland.

Notes:

Tour capacity is limited.  Must be four feet tall to access the tower.  Check tour times on the Discovery Center schedule.  $2 per person fee goes toward a maitenance fund for the tower.
